We know you’re eager to get an update about opening day. We’re expecting a mix of rain/snow on Friday and need to assess the impact of this precipitation before providing further details. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, please see an update from our Patrol Director about snow reporting this winter. -Ellen
Hey everyone,
I’m Angela, the Director of Ski Patrol at Stevens Pass, and I have an update about our snow reporting this season. We’re thrilled to announce a change that will enhance the accuracy of our snow reporting. For years, we’ve relied on the Schmidt Haus, managed by our valued partner WSDOT, as our official snowfall recording site. The Schmidt Haus has been a dependable and trusted resource, but this winter, we’re moving our official snow reporting to a new location: the Brooks station.
Located mid-mountain, near the snow stake, the Brooks station will provide a more accurate representation of snowfall across the mountain. Why the change? While the Schmidt Haus has served us well, it sits at a lower elevation than our base area. In contrast, the Brooks site is situated at mid-mountain, giving us snowfall data that better reflects what’s happening across the slopes.
Over the past season, we’ve worked diligently to observe and fine-tune our reporting at Brooks. We’re confident that this updated site will deliver consistent, reliable measurements you can count on when planning your trips to the mountain. And the snow totals will reflect what you see on the snow stake cam. We’re grateful for the partnership and support from WSDOT over the years and remain committed to transparency and accuracy in our snow reporting.
Also, if you’re planning an uphill adventure at the ski area, call the uphill hotline at 206.812.7847 and check the Northwest Avalanche Center website for the current avalanche hazard before you go. It’s essential to stay informed about current restrictions and any operational updates. When you’re on the mountain, pay attention and yield to any machinery you encounter as our team is working hard to get terrain ready. Early season conditions exist, so be mindful of your surroundings as you explore the mountain.
See you soon!
Angela
